Yes, SEO is still worth it for small businesses

Yes, you do need SEO (search engine optimisation) for your website.

Yes, even though people are getting answers from AI.

Without this you’ll be much harder to find, and easier to be misunderstood.

SEO (search engine optimisation) means doing work on your web page to make it easier for people, AI, and search engines to find you.

SEO is still worth it for small business, because AI answers need to get facts from somewhere

AI answer engines need to get information from somewhere! And that somewhere should be something that you have control over. If your website isn’t optimised, the AI machines won’t know what to say about you and might invent false statements!

AI answer engines will never say, “I don’t know.” They will never honestly tell you if they lack information about a topic. They are punished for saying “I don’t know.”

If I were you, I wouldn’t leave this up to chance. I’d want to do everything in my power so that the AI answers are accurate about me and my small business.

The solution?

To ensure you are found, and found for the right reasons, your website should act as your source of truth.

If you don’t optimise, the AI answers won’t know what to say about you.

So yes, you can absolutely stay ahead by doing what we’ve always done with SEO:

  • Providing content that helps people do, learn, or fix something.
  • Including descriptions to help search engines understand what your content is about.
  • Working on getting reviews to show you have positive reputation and evidence of your work.
  • Getting relevant links and citations that also provide evidence of your work or expertise.

Just wanted to remind you all — despite a large amount of web activity performed by bots — there are still human beings, with souls and emotions behind usernames. It’s an easy thing to forget.

“I came to Lou wanting to know if I could use paid ads to boost my webinar series attendants. Beyond that, I had no knowledge, info, or path! Lou asked questions that not only helped me to ultimately choose that paid ads were NOT correct for me, but helped me make better business decisions.”
