What Makes a Great Website Design – It’s in the Colours!

Dec 29, 2024 | Website Tips

When asked what makes a great website design, what do you think of? Here’s something that’ll make or break whether someone stays or clicks away: Colour!

Colour in your website design is something you have absolute control over. In my years of experience and professional training, I have found the best decision you can make is to choose colours that suit your audience’s needs.

Don’t go all in on your favourite colours just because you like them! If you want to make a website that is only for your own viewing pleasure, then that’s not likely to win you sales — Your website is an important tool in convincing visitors whether they want to buy from you or not. A bad colour combination that is difficult to read will make people leave and give money to someone else.

Here are some helpful tips on colour in web design:

— Avoid using pure black (# 000000) or pure white (# FFFFFF) as these can be harsh on the eyes. Even if one of these is your brand colour, I would highly suggest going a little bit off these shades, as that will make it easier for more people to read your content.

— If you have not considered how your brand makes people feel, then this is a good time to do so. Blue evokes trust, red evokes love and passion. But a bright, aqua blue can also be fun and playful!

— Ensure you provide a good amount of contrast. Not everyone has 20-20 vision, and setting your contrast right can help a larger proportion of people want to stick around on your website and actually get to know you. Browser plugins, such as the Accessible Web Helper, can help you see where your page needs tweaking for better contrast.

I hope this was helpful! 😊 Again, following this advice and making your website for your visitors can make or break one’s decision to stay or go. Also, if you’re feeling unsure about designing your website yourself, feel free to reach out. I’m professionally trained, and can help you make a good impression by following good design principles.
