Understanding Websites

How Much Does It Cost to Design a Website in Australia?

Estimated Reading Time: 6 min

Website design in Australia typically costs between $2,500 and $20,000+, depending on what the website is actually built to do. A basic brochure site sits at the lower end of that range, and may serve you as a passive asset. While a custom business website designed to attract traffic, build trust, and generate enquiries or sales sits significantly higher. The final price depends on page count, functionality, SEO foundations. You’ll also want to consider the level of strategic thinking that goes into the build, too.

Why Website Design Prices Vary So Much

Honestly, you’ll find prices all over the place — and it’s completely reasonable to feel confused by that.

At the lower end (think under $500), you might be looking at a digital agency’s loss-leader offer. They position this low-cost website to get you in the door, then upsell you on ongoing marketing services. I know this because I have worked inside agencies that operate exactly this way. Or it’s a quick turnaround with an AI-generated page that technically gives you “a website”, sure. But the AI output probably hasn’t considered the strategy, structure, or user experience that make a website actually work for your business.

At the higher end, project costs often reflect things like custom software development, API integrations. Your website quote might also bundle in professional copywriting, photography, or video production.

My projects start from AUD $2,500–$3,000 (excluding GST). Every site I build in that range gets the same careful thinking. It loads fast, shows up in Google, and guides visitors toward making an enquiry or a purchase. There’s no upsell waiting around the corner, and no corners cut to get there.

What Are You Actually Paying For? (More Than Pretty Pages)

A common misconception is that website design is about making something look good. Looks matter, but your website has to do more than look nice.

Your website is like an employee. A well-built website works for you while you’re not at your desk Ideally, your website is attracting the right people through search, establishing credibility, and creating a clear path to buy your thing.

A poorly built site sits online without doing much of anything. You can think of it as the difference between some bloke standing by the side of the road waving a sign, and a skilled sales consultant. The guy with the sign waits passively. But the sales genius knows how to build trust and guide the right person towards a decision.

Looks will get you in the door, but personality keeps you in the room.

Unknown

When you invest in professional website design, you are typically paying for some or all of the following:

  • Strategy and structure: Mapping the user journey so visitors naturally flow from entry to enquiry.
  • SEO foundations: Correct heading hierarchy, fast load times, mobile responsiveness, and a technical architecture. In other words: Structure that search engines can read, understand, and rank.
  • Messaging and copy guidance: This means structuring the website around words that speak directly to your ideal customer’s needs and hesitations. It’s not just filler text written to fill a block.
  • Conversion logic: Knowing where to place calls-to-action, and how to reduce the friction between a visitor’s first impression and their decision to contact you.
  • Brand consistency: Making sure the visual design reflects the quality and professionalism of the business it represents. This is only possible when you have a clear brand strategy to work from — here’s a primer on what brand strategy actually means.

A website that looks fine but skips all of this thinking is a missed opportunity, not a business asset.

Is an AI Website Really Free?

Technically, yes. Generating a basic website layout using AI tools costs very little — sometimes nothing at all. And if all you need is a simple placeholder page while you get started, that might be enough.

But “cheap to build” is not the same as “effective for your business.”

AI can generate pages. What it can’t do is define your unique market positioning because it isn’t living in your experience. AI also can’t understand the specific hesitations of your ideal customer, or make deliberate strategic decisions about your website’s messaging.

The result is often a site that looks presentable on first glance, sure. But lacks the clarity, structure, and trust signals that actually drive enquiries.

Freelancer, Agency, or DIY?

The right choice depends on your budget, your timeline, and what you actually need the website to do.

DIY (Website Builders like Squarespace or Google Sites):
The cheapest option on paper, but the real cost is your time. You become the designer, the strategist, the copywriter, and the SEO specialist. And you can go ahead and try it out without necessarily having experience in any of those disciplines. This pathway is best suited to sole traders who are just getting started and need something live quickly.

Marketing or Web Design Agencies:
With agencies, you’re hiring a full team (designers, developers, copywriters, project managers), which is reflected in their pricing. For large businesses with complex needs, the investment makes sense. For sole traders and small practice health professionals, you are often paying for overhead that has nothing to do with your project.

Specialist Web Designers and Consultants:
A specialist brings senior-level strategy and design expertise without the agency price tag or the agency structure. You work directly with the person doing the work, which means faster communication, focused decision-making, and a final product built around your specific business goals rather than “because everyone else’s looks like that.”

What Else to Budget For

A website build is one cost. But it is not the only one. Running a professional website comes with a few ongoing costs worth knowing about upfront:

  • Domain registration: Typically $15–$50 per year depending on your domain extension (.com.au, .com, etc.)
  • Website hosting: Ranges from around $10–$30 per month for shared hosting up to $30–$100+ per month for managed WordPress hosting, which is generally the better option for performance and security. Look for Australian-based servers to ensure fast download times for local customers.
  • Care and maintenance (WordPress sites): Core updates, automated backups, and uptime monitoring to keep your site running securely. See my WordPress care plans for what’s included.
  • Ongoing SEO: Launching a website is step one. Ongoing SEO work — including content and technical maintenance — is what sustains and improves your search rankings over time.

So, How Much Does a Website Cost in Australia?

Website design costs in Australia vary because websites vary. A basic online presence and a strategically built business tool are not the same thing — and they should not carry the same price tag.

If you are researching website costs because your current site is ageing and you are wondering whether a rebuild is worth the investment, the honest answer is: it depends on what you need your website to do. For most small and medium businesses, a well-built site in the $2,500 to $8,000 range will outperform a cheap or AI-generated one many times over — not because it looks better, but because it has been built with a clear purpose.

The best website for your business is one that earns its keep. If you are not sure whether yours is doing that, the checklist below is a good place to start.

FAQs

What is included in website design cost?

This varies by provider, but a well-scoped project typically includes the design, development, mobile responsiveness, basic SEO foundations, contact forms, and a handover or training session. Copywriting, photography, video, and hosting are often quoted separately for a project, unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Is SEO included when I pay for website design?

Don’t assume it is. Some web designers will build your site to be technically SEO-ready — meaning correct heading structure, fast load speed, and mobile optimisation — but that is not a given, and it is not the same as an ongoing SEO strategy. If getting found online matters to your business (and for most, it does), ask your designer to explicitly include SEO foundations in the scope before you sign off.

Are domain and hosting costs included in the build?

Not usually. Domain registration and hosting are ongoing costs that sit outside the build fee. Your designer should discuss and recommend the right hosting setup as part of the project, but you will typically pay for these separately.

One thing worth knowing: if your agency or web designer is listed as the registered owner of your domain name or hosting account, that is a red flag. These accounts should always be registered in your name, with your own login credentials. If you ever need to move providers or part ways with your designer, you want full ownership and access to your own digital assets — no negotiation required.

How long does it take to design a small business website?

A well-scoped small business website usually takes four to eight weeks from project kick-off to launch. It largely depends on how quickly content and feedback are provided by the client. Rushed timelines tend to produce rushed results.

Why are some website quotes under $500?

Very low quotes usually indicate a template-based or AI-generated build with minimal strategy, a loss-leader designed to upsell you on ongoing services, or a provider working at a very high volume. (And someone working at such a volume will make thorough, personalised work difficult.) If your website is an important part of how you attract local Melbourne clients, it is worth asking exactly what is included at that price point. And what is not.
