How I Work

I pride myself as being as gentle and transparent as I possibly can. But sometimes, and very understandably, creating a website can come with lots of questions and unknowns. And it’s okay! Nobody is an expert in their subject on Day One, and neither was I.

Generally speaking, a website project with me looks like this:

  • You let me know what your goals are. I.e. what your website needs to do.
  • We determine what, if any content is needed. (If this is just a straight redesign and you don’t need to rewrite anything, that is okay.)
  • I get to work putting all the pieces together.
  • I’ll tell you what comes next in the process, always. (If you’re ever unsure, you are welcome to email me!)
  • You and I review, we test, we go live, and (if required) get your analytics or CRM hooked up .

Also, expect…

  • When I build your website, it means I’ll be putting all your pieces together into a digital application that helps your ideal customer/client understand what you do, and choose you. It doesn’t automatically mean I will write your copy, illustrate, or photograph images for you, though. So please bear that in mind.
  • You may need to do some work. And you may need to spend some time reviewing content, and/or approving your draft design. If you don’t fancy yourself a photographer or a writer, but need that content for your website, be prepared to pay extra for that!
  • Content doesn’t come from thin air. It’s not a good look to steal content from your competitor’s website. And if you are keen on using AI, just know that:
    • AI generated images or content may not have the best impact (i.e. represent your business in the best possible light) and,
    • I won’t populate your website’s pages with AI generated content as part of my service. You are welcome to add whatever you wish to your website, and I’m not going to police you there — I’m just not going to do it for you, if asked. Generative AI undermines the work of photographers, illustrators, designers, and copywriters; and this is something I can’t bring myself to participate in.
  • There will be meetings. I prefer to meet on Zoom. But if you are local to Merri-bek VIC, we can chat in a private meeting room in Brunswick. (If your communication style prefers that we talk over email/text, that is okay too! Being neurodivergent myself, I understand and accept the need for different ways to process communication.)
  • There will be documents to sign. This isn’t to “box you in”, it’s to create a paper trail so we’re both clear on what’s happening, and don’t get off-track or confused.

My boundaries

  • My phone number is not on my website because I hate spam as much as you do, lol. You’re welcome to request a callback though.
  • Messaging me before you book paid services is a good idea. If you would like me to do something that falls outside of my main offers, I’ll do my best to seek out a suitable service provider who can help.

What makes a website truly awesome?

Looking aesthetically nice is part of the deal, yes. But here’s what else I like to see:

  • Your content speaks to what your customers or clients desire. Walls of text don’t sell — emotional connection does.
  • It’s clean, clear, and user-friendly. Users know what to do, and they do it!
  • And it’s set up with goals in mind that we can measure.

Q & A

Will I own the website you make for me?

Yes! You’re in control here.

Some web developers and agencies run on a model where you ‘lease’ your website, or otherwise don’t have access to the admin tools.

When I build a website for you, I welcome you to own it your way. Whether you want to make edits yourself, or stay on a retainer with me to help you, either option is valid!

What do you need to start a website?

This is a great and very common question. I have explained in detail in this under 30 minute presentation. I aim to not leave any stone unturned for you.

Can I afford your help?

FYI: When you’re hiring me to build your website or advise you on digital marketing, you’re not just buying my hours.

You’re choosing me for my expertise in building something that lasts. (Also, I don’t cut corners.)

If you’re concerned about cash-flow, you are welcome to work out payment plans with me. Business owners come to me from all walks of life, different stages of growth, and different levels of funding. I get it!

Are you a web designer or web developer?

Either term is applicable to me.

A web designer decides how a website looks, and might use visual tools (like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe XD, or Figma) to mock it up. And a front-end web developer writes code (like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) to “program” a web interface. I have skills and experience in both areas, so I may use the terms interchangeably for myself.

Can we meet/work together in person?

Face-to-face strategy sessions, tutorials, and workshopping together are available to paying clients.

This currently is available at Balam Balam Place, Brunswick, Victoria, Australia. Please reach out to discuss.

What is your phone number?

My phone number is not on my website because I hate spam. You’re welcome to request a callback, and I’ll text or call you as soon as I can.

And if you’re not sure?

If you’re not 100% sure on what functions your website should have, or how it should look, that’s okay!

Have an explore of what your competitors are doing, and think about if you were a customer — what aspects do you like and not like about the experience?
